Tucked away in Frankfurt's Schäfergasse 20, Zum Schwejk has been a cornerstone of the city's gay scene since 1987. This lively bar welcomes a diverse crowd, from locals to visitors, all eager to soak in its vibrant atmosphere. The interior boasts quirky, seasonally updated décor, adding a fresh twist to each visit. Smoking is permitted inside, contributing to its traditional pub vibe. Notably, the bar doesn't offer Wi-Fi, encouraging patrons to engage in face-to-face conversations. While a wide selection of drinks is available, including the local favorite "Äppelwoi" (apple wine), food isn't on the menu. Operating hours span from Tuesday to Saturday, opening at 4 PM, with extended hours on weekends. Sundays and Mondays are reserved for rest. The bar maintains an 18+ policy, ensuring an adult environment. During warmer months, outdoor seating is available, providing a pleasant spot to enjoy a drink al fresco.
Visited on the weekend for the first time in 8 years, and safe to say it’s not changed one bit (in a good way). Great atmosphere as always, even if a little crazy. Cheap beers.
Massively busy on the Saturday night I visited. It was pretty hard to manoeuvre towards the bar or find a comfortable position to stand and chat. As soon as I walked in there was some predatory behaviour from an older guy - maybe I was unlucky on the night, but it made me feel uncomfortable. Clearly it’s a place many people like, but I think I wouldn’t come back. It was largely schlager music and the crowd seemed to lay largely within the age range between late twenties and their sixties.
It’s horrible. The person working as a bar runner was super impolite to me from the beginning. I asked him what I can do to be a better client. He was weird and very disturbing touching and pushing me. After he took a picture of my boyfriend I told him to delete it. First very calm but he got aggressive so I got loud then he pushed me and touched me. I did not touch him at all. he got very aggressive. The staff at the bar saw it and they were weirded out. So I went out of the place and he harassed me that I should go to hell - it was horrible. The place is amazing but this one person staff needs to go no tolerance at all - very inappropriate for that place!
Note to foreign tourists: This bar has a somewhat unusual system. On your first order you'll receive a small card on which all your drinks are added. You pay everything in one go when you are leaving. Keep this card tight, otherwise you're risking to be charged a hefty minimum spend. This has been my favourite bar in Frankfurt since the mid 90:s. More of a "kneipe" than a trendy bar. Always busy but probably not everybody's taste but definitely mine! 😉 Mixed ages and 99% men.
