Popular bar with labyrinthine sized darkroom

About

The Cuckoo's Nest has long been a beacon for the gay community, renowned for its vibrant yet casual atmosphere. Since its inception in 1984, this gay bar and cruise club has evolved from a dedicated leather bar into a popular hangout for a diverse group of gay and bisexual men.

Known for its no-cover policy, The Cuckoo's Nest encourages visitors to enjoy the setting without an entrance fee, though purchasing a drink per visit is expected to help maintain the establishment. The bar's laid-back vibe extends into its darkroom, one of the largest of its kind in Europe, offering a labyrinthine adventure to those inclined.

The club is especially popular for after-work gatherings and late evening socials, thanks to its central location at Nieuwezijds Kolk 6, a stone's throw from other local hotspots. Patrons can enjoy a range of music from dance to electropop, creating an inviting backdrop for both newcomers and regulars. The underground play area is well-equipped with private cabins and mazes, providing a thrilling escape for those seeking a more adventurous night out.

Visitors should be mindful of their belongings, as the dimly lit areas can attract pickpockets. The Cuckoo's Nest is strict about its rules, emphasizing respect and safety within its space, including a ban on drugs and a commitment to promoting safe sex practices.

For those interested in exploring a key part of Amsterdam's gay nightlife, The Cuckoo's Nest offers a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary cruising culture, making it a must-visit for locals and tourists alike.

Kindest bartender ever, he protected me from another very rude customer. He enjoys his job, and I can see he takes his pride in his work. It's so cool to be in a presence of someone who cares about his work and is passionate. The place is is located in a bit secluded area, but then again, this is Amsterdam. Everything is kind of hidden. I absolutely loved it. Despite the drinks not being on the cheapside, it ABSOLUTELY makes it up with CLEAN and pristine conditions inside. Also not to mention, fully AIR CONDITIONED indoors?? Do you know how rare that is in Amsterdam? 100% recommended. Love this place.

This is a favourite gay bar in Amsterdam. A place with great beers and drinks meet new mates and some new mistakes (wink wink, say no more)

Stagnant & stuck in the past: Aging jobless guys cling to faded 70s glory, oblivious to life beyond the worn-out bar. A stark reminder of time wasted. Young wardrobe guy knows no manners and is not client friendly. Beware.

Best bar. Whether you’re in the lifestyle or not kindness is all you will receive. Great drinks, great atmosphere. A little hideout from the sun.

I have read reviews from people who say they are racist, I am a foreigner and the waiter treated me very well, polite and friendly. It is true that the place is quite old, but it was not as dirty as I have seen others in Amsterdam. I recommend it 👍

Ugly old man behind the bar with a poor attitude - we ordered but left before we consumed. He gave us bad attitude as soon as we entered and then proceeded to ask my 47 year old husband for ID because, in his words, "because you're Asian". So much for 'Everyone is Welcome Here'. Avoid this place.

Fun bar. Bartender is super sweet and kind. Coat room attendant was fun chatted me up. Welcoming to out of towners.I didn't cruise downstairs as it was early and i just wanted a coupke of beers. Not sure why Heineken taste so much better here. The Affligem Tripple is delicious and only $4.70.

Nice and friendly staff. Nice bar. So far no problem. But downstairs (cruising area) it is depressing. No matter what day or time you go there, you will always meet the same old (jobless ?) losers who seem to be there every day. They enter for the amount of one drink and use it as an oldies hangout. Even a guy who looks like Putin is always there.

My friends and I came to Amsterdam and this was a happy little accident of a bar across from our hotel. The people, both guests and staff, were amazing. Many new friends were found here, some fun along the way, and ultimately this became our “Home Bar” while we were here. 100% would recommend.

Tiny, friendly gay men's bar. Music played at a level where we could still have a conversation. Only downside: no beers on tap. Liked it regardless.
