About Ginger’s Bar

Ginger’s Bar is a long-running lesbian and queer neighbourhood pub on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Opened in 2000, it describes itself as Brooklyn’s oldest lesbian bar and remains an important gathering place within New York’s LGBTQ+ nightlife. The venue has the informal character of a classic local dive bar rather than a polished cocktail lounge. Inside, visitors will find a long bar, a pool table and space for conversation, while the backyard patio offers an outdoor area for meeting friends and relaxing during warmer weather. The atmosphere can vary significantly throughout the week. Quieter periods are well suited to casual drinks, dates or playing pool, while karaoke, drag, DJ nights, tournaments and other community events can create a busier and more energetic crowd. The bar’s current programme includes recurring karaoke, pool and queer performance events. Ginger’s attracts regulars from the surrounding neighbourhood alongside LGBTQ+ visitors exploring Brooklyn. Its history, unpretentious setting and community focus make it one of New York City’s most significant surviving lesbian spaces. Check its Instagram or Linktree before visiting for current events and any programme changes.

Ginger's is such a lovely and welcoming spot in Park Slope. Im Irish and a lesbian & the welcome i was given made me feel like I was just at home. The gorge bartenders even let me finish my drink as they cleaned around me as I only arrived when they called last orders. It is such a cool spot with a relaxed vibe. If you are in Park Slope definitely pop in and say hello to the lovely team here 😊

A beautiful atmosphere…. It’s somewhere I could definitely see myself wanting to hang out. However, I walked in and quickly realized I was the only black person and it was HUGE turn off…. I did have hope that as the oldest lesbian bar it would feel more diverse. Just a heads up if you’re a black queer person exploring new spaces. Come with friends? EDIT: went back with friends only to realize it’s also super heteronormative which is sad because it’s supposed to be fun gay… sure it’s very “lesbian” but NOT at all queer!! And still no black people 😕

Great vibe all around. A nearby bartender recommended this when the bar was closing because Ginger is open later. Outdoor space in the back, cool, dance floor, and packed bar. No food served, only your typical bar drinks.

I had a great opinion of this place until tonight when I was told a bartender overserved my friend and refused to give her water when she requested it (?!?!?!) WHO DOES THIS? EDIT: After looking through the reviews and seeing the multiple bad experiences of other POC at this establishment, I want to point out that while my friend is a white Jewish woman, I myself am a woman of color. I would hate to think that my friend was put in danger because she chooses to publically associate with a black woman in what SHOULD be a safe space for all.

A lovely lesbian bar with welcoming and relaxing energy! The outdoor back patio is so cute and I love that they let you bring outside food in. The shirley temple was utterly delicious (with three cherries!!!) and only $3!
