About Henrietta Hudson

Henrietta Hudson is a landmark lesbian-built queer bar on Hudson Street in New York’s West Village. Open since 1991, it has served for decades as a neighbourhood gathering place, activist space and safe haven for lesbians and the wider LGBTQ+ community. The venue describes itself as a “queer human bar built by lesbians,” reflecting both its lesbian history and its inclusive approach to today’s diverse queer community. Its interior combines a colourful mid-century-inspired lounge with comfortable seating, areas for conversation and space that becomes livelier during DJs, dancing and special events. Visitors can stop by for cocktails, wine and food, meet friends in a relaxed setting or attend one of the bar’s changing queer events. Programming has included club nights, karaoke, drag and performance events, themed parties and community gatherings, so the experience can vary considerably depending on the evening. Henrietta Hudson is particularly significant for visitors interested in New York’s LGBTQ+ history as well as its current nightlife. Earlier hours may feel more like an intimate neighbourhood lounge, while Friday and Saturday nights can become energetic and crowded. Check the official website or Instagram before visiting for the latest events and opening information.

Such a cute place in a nice area. Staff is very kind and efficient. The atmosphere is very sapphic, with low lighting and sweet but lively dance music. Highly recommend this lesbian bar for any sapphics looking for a cozy place to party!

I was visiting from out of state and this bar was truly such an amazing place. The history and vibe are absolutely incredible. I heard about the location through malea’s social media, and got to meet her! She was so inviting and made me feel comfortable and excited about the bar. I was happily surprised at my level of enjoyment. I also got the absolute pleasure of talking with Mo and Maxine (some of the amazing bartenders) they were truly amazing and made me so safe and welcome in an unfamiliar environment. I cannot recommend this place enough and if Malea, Mo, or Maxine is there, make sure to say hi!

I visited this bar for the first time last night with a friend and was genuinely looking forward to the experience, as it had been highly recommended. Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. From the start, the bartender working near the dance floor appeared to intentionally avoid eye contact, keeping her head down and ignoring customers who were clearly trying to order. I initially gave her the benefit of the doubt, considering how busy and loud the environment can be. However, this behavior continued throughout the night. Later, when I approached again, I stood directly in front of her and said “hello” multiple times in a loud voice. Despite being close enough to be heard, she continued to ignore me until I had to raise my voice and gesture for attention. When she finally acknowledged me, I asked if she was pretending not to hear me. She took offense and refused to serve me, responding with a hostile attitude. What was even more concerning was that she then instructed another bartender not to serve me either. This was extremely unprofessional. Refusing service over a comment—without any abusive language, threats, or inappropriate behavior from my side—is unacceptable. Personal feelings should not interfere with providing basic customer service. This experience left a very negative impression. I will not be returning if this is the level of professionalism tolerated at this establishment.

I’m sorry to see a couple of constructive reviews because I’ve been coming to Hens for many years and always have a fabulous time. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, the drinks are delicious and the atmosphere is so much more fun and inviting than most bars. They’ve evolved a lot over time and their investment into the space clearly shows. The dancing is great and they have cute themed events and programming which are always a blast. Bonus, there’s lots of great food nearby to fight a hangover! I’m grateful for the efforts these folks put in and to have this mainstay of queer culture in our fantastic city.

Always double check what events they have going on there before you go cause my friend and I did accidentally show up during a silver fox mixer. Super fun place with a great bar menu though, the bartenders are always nice and make good drinks. Not too small but can get packed. Plus they have two bathrooms which is so nice
