About La Cave Wilson

La Cave Wilson puts performance at the centre of the evening. On Rue Gubernatis in central Nice, the bar combines drinks with a small stage and a theatrical interior, giving it a very different feel from the city’s more straightforward gay bars and clubs. Cabaret is a key part of the programme, with burlesque and other live entertainment appearing on selected nights. That makes the venue especially worth checking when there is a show scheduled: outside performance nights it functions more like a conventional bar, but when the stage is active the entertainment becomes the main event.

What to expect

Expect an intimate cabaret-style bar rather than a nightclub. On show nights, the small stage is the focus; on quieter evenings, the venue works more like a drinks bar with theatrical surroundings.

Stopped by for a quick drink. There was a sign on the door saying no card payments. Friendly barman. Quirky film posters and cultural artifacts decorating the inside.

Lovely neighborhood bar with extremely friendly staff. Great place to go for a casual drink whether you’re alone or with a group. Everyone is friendly from the doorman to the bartender to the owner. Special shout out to bartenders Laurent and Fabien! Merci Beaucoup!

My husband and I ended up here one Monday night in October when we were visiting for a few days. We got a lovely warm welcome from the staff and the locals that were having a quiet few drinks. By the end of the night we were all swapping stories and singing to the music. I would highly recommend this place.

Ah, where to begin with this gem of a gay bar in Nice? If you're fluent in French and happen to have been born and raised in the very heart of France, congratulations—you're going to have the time of your life here! But for the rest of us non-French-speaking mortals, it's a completely different story. The moment we walked up to the door, we were greeted with… oh wait, we weren’t. That friendly welcome must be reserved exclusively for the French-speaking clientele because we were practically invisible. I guess I should’ve brushed up on my high school French before daring to say hi. When we finally managed to get the door man’s attention (by waving, begging, and perhaps performing an interpretive dance), we were met with the kind of warmth you'd expect from someone forced to do their taxes in a snowstorm. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience to be treated with such condescending disdain just because you speak English. The eye-rolls were so intense I was worried the staff might injure themselves. I can only assume that speaking another language in this establishment is akin to committing a serious crime, because we were treated like we’d just insulted their ancestors. So, if you’re feeling particularly masochistic and want to be reminded that your existence is a burden, definitely check this place out! Otherwise, I'd recommend going literally anywhere else in Nice, where you might actually get served without needing a French passport. Cheers—just not here.
