About Löwenherz

Löwenherz is one of Europe’s most established LGBTQ+ bookshops and a cornerstone of Vienna’s queer cultural life. Founded in 1993, the independent bookstore has grown from a small specialist shop into a trusted destination for readers seeking gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender literature from around the world. Located in Vienna’s Alsergrund district, Löwenherz offers a carefully curated selection of more than 12,000 titles, ranging from contemporary queer fiction and non-fiction to history, theory, biography and youth literature. The shop places equal emphasis on gay and lesbian voices and has long expanded its scope to include trans, bi and queer perspectives, making it a genuinely inclusive space. Beyond books, Löwenherz stocks international magazines, DVDs, music and a range of LGBTQ+ accessories, including pins, stickers and pride flags. Customers can also request hard-to-find or out-of-print titles, with staff experienced in sourcing specialist publications from across Europe and beyond. Löwenherz is more than a retail space. It has played an active role in Vienna’s LGBTQ+ community for decades, supporting local initiatives and hosting readings, talks and cultural events in collaboration with community organisations. For visitors, it’s a welcoming place to explore queer culture and get local recommendations; for locals, it remains a vital meeting point and cultural hub.

Okay so, the whole experience here was just SO AMAZING, I don't even know where to begin. I've never been to a queer store before, so this one just completely blew me away. The inside is really neatly arranged, and there are books from various different genres, both in German and English. They also have movies, magazines, pins, flags, stickers, kids books, hardcovers and so on. And in one of the corners there's this really cute table where you can just sit and browse books. The guy working there (possibly the owner?) was really super sweet and just so clever and interesting, and took his time to talk to me about some topics related to lgbtq+ history and helped me locate some very interesting books, of which I ended up buying "Gay Berlin". He also managed to dig out a straight ally flag that I got for my friend, and just overall took me around the store to show me all the things they had. I'm really so grateful that he completely just normalized this experience so to say, considering I was kind of nervous visiting a store like this, especially as I'm coming from a very conservative country. Next time I'm in Vienna, I'm FOR SURE coming back to the store haha. Loved it so much and hope to be back here again one day!

The place offers a warm and kind atmosphere. It has plenty of English books. I have to study German harder so as to understand the abundant sources the bookstore provides.
