About Queer Britain

Nestled in the heart of London's vibrant King's Cross area, Queer Britain stands as the UK's first national LGBTQ+ museum. It's more than just a museum; it's a celebration of queer history, identity, and culture. A visit to this innovative space offers a rich tapestry of stories and artefacts that span over a century of queer life, making it a must-visit for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ history and culture. The museum's interior is a treasure trove of queer history, featuring a diverse array of artefacts and exhibits of over 200 objects on show from photographs and posters to clothes and banners The new collections gallery tells stories of queer life, love, protest and artistry through six themes: Resist! looks at efforts to organise against oppression and focuses on the story of The Black Lesbian and Gay Centre, which was an integral contributor to the LGBTQ+ activism of the 1980s and 1990s. Co-curated by filmmaker Veronica McKenzie and a group of community members, it includes rarely seen posters and pamphlets. - Club Kids celebrates alternative ways of coming together and opens with a showcase of Club Kali – the UK’s first ever space welcoming all LGBTQ+ people to connect and celebrate their diverse South Asian heritage. - Queer Creativity focuses on artistic pursuits and tells the story of the Women’s Liberation music-making movement of the 1970’s and 1980’s which included major contributions from lesbian, bisexual, queer and trans women. - Body and Mind reclaims narratives around LGBTQ+ experiences of health, illness and disability and until the end of May 2026 will display a panel from the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt, part of the largest community arts project in history. - Live, Laugh, Love tells stories of domesticity and relationships and focuses on Bloomsbury group members Lytton Strachey and Dora Carrington whose tight, loving bond included comfortably sharing boyfriends. - The World Around Us explores the wider place of queer life in society and features the story of Justin Fashanu, the first Black footballer to have a £1 million transfer fee, who announced that he was gay in 1990 after being threatened with being outed by the press. Queer Britain isn't just about looking back; it's a space that resonates with the contemporary queer experience. The museum hosts various events and workshops, offering a dynamic and engaging experience. Its location in the recently-redeveloped King’s Cross area, a hub of culture and creativity, adds to its appeal. This pioneering museum goes beyond preserving history; it's a place where the LGBTQ+ community can see themselves represented in ways that were once unimaginable. It's an affirming space that celebrates queer accomplishments and provides a powerful reminder of the community's resilience and diversity. As the museum continues to evolve, it remains a beacon of inclusivity and representation, ensuring that the stories and experiences of the LGBTQ+ community are not just remembered, but celebrated.

A small museum, but with a very powerful and meaningful collection. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. I'm glad I went out of my way to see it!

Lovely little museum that shows off a side of queer history we don't hear about. Amazing little artifacts and videos. The staff are so kind and helpful. And overall just a nice calm place. I get close to tears at the exhibitions here, they are so moving and I'm glad they are getting attention.

An engaging little museum on the fight for LGBTQ+ equality that my friends and I enjoyed wandering around- it probably took us around an hour. Free, but with the opportunity to make a donation, and queer businesses feature in the gift shop 🏳️‍🌈

Loved it. A small space but very powerful and very friendly staff. Stories of the discrimination and adversity our community has faced, but also how this has lead to art, celebration, advocacy, dance floors and ultimately PRIDE. The wall of answers to “what makes you proud” had me in happy tears. Well worth the visit

A lovely free museum to stroll through for a good history lesson on the queerness of Britain! The museum is donation based and very inclusive. At the time of this review they only had 2 rooms, but working on building more. My favourite part were the antique telephone which played recording of people who had worked on the London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard. Has a lovely little store with queer books and souvenirs at the end. Although small, it is well curated and it’s important to keep in mind that their limited exhibits is not due to lack of effort, but due to lack of funds. Worth visiting and donating to the cause!
