EROS – The Center for Safe Sex was a gay male community space in San Francisco that combined social connection, education, and wellness with a strong emphasis on consent and harm reduction. Operating on a community-center model rather than a traditional nightclub or bathhouse, EROS provided a unique environment that prioritised sexual health, safety, and informed exploration. The venue featured a mix of spaces including a lounge, gallery, and classroom used for social and educational events, alongside men-only play areas, a steam room, sauna, showers, and non-sexual massage services. EROS was widely recognised for its structured approach to safer sex practices and for fostering a respectful, community-driven atmosphere that differed from many other adult venues. EROS permanently closed in 2020 and has not reopened. It remains an important part of San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ history, remembered for its pioneering role in combining sexual freedom with education, responsibility, and community care.
