About The Backstreet
The Backstreet operated in Mile End from 1985 to 2022 and became an institution in London’s gay leather and rubber scene. Hidden in Wentworth Mews, the men-only club was known for a genuinely strict fetish dress code, themed nights and a private smoking area. The venue closed permanently on 17 July 2022 after 37 years. Its influence continues through archive projects, talks and a documentary, but the original club is no longer open to visitors.
