About The Yard

The Yard is one of Soho's most distinctive gay bars, hidden behind a passage on Rupert Street. Its large, plant-filled courtyard offers rare outdoor space in central London, making it particularly appealing on warm afternoons and early evenings. Upstairs, the Loft Bar adds exposed brick, more seating and a stronger cocktail focus. The mood is generally stylish and sociable rather than club-heavy, with a predominantly gay crowd and enough space for dates, groups and after-work drinks. Music becomes livelier later, but conversation remains a bigger part of the appeal than a packed dancefloor. The courtyard is partly covered but still affected by weather, and tables are popular at peak times. Check current booking options and upstairs opening before visiting for a specific space.

What to expect

Expect a smart, sociable gay bar with a leafy courtyard at its centre. It is well suited to cocktails and conversation rather than all-night clubbing.

OK the place can be over packed.... but it is so nice to enjoy the sun (while it lasts) from inside the venue. My favourite (summer) place to meet my friends.

The best place to go for outside areas in the summer (and even winter with heating pannels) a young and vibrant place for a drink either after work or on a weekend afternoon.

I have been coming to The Yard for almost 20 years. It was the very first gay bar I ever visited when I moved to London, and it holds many happy memories for me. More recently, I’ve been coming here almost every Friday afternoon with a friend from work. Sadly, today’s experience has convinced me that I won’t be returning. From the moment I approached the bar, the customer service was appalling. I politely asked whether they served any nibbles, and the member of staff who served me responded with a dismissive and unnecessarily rude attitude. My friend and I then sat at an empty table. There was no sign whatsoever indicating that it was reserved. Around 25 minutes later, after we had already settled with our drinks, the same staff member came over and told us we had to leave because the table was reserved. Had there been a reservation sign, we would never have sat there in the first place. What disappointed me most wasn’t having to move—it was the way we were spoken to. The interaction was abrupt, discourteous, and completely lacking in basic customer service. When I left, I told the staff member that his attitude was unacceptable and that, after nearly two decades of coming to The Yard, this would be my last visit. I also spoke to the manager to explain what had happened before leaving. It’s heartbreaking to say this about a place that once meant so much to me. The Yard used to feel warm, welcoming, and genuinely inclusive. Today, it felt like a shadow of what it once was. There are plenty of venues in Soho where customers are treated with courtesy and respect. Sadly, based on today’s experience, I can no longer recommend The Yard.

Stayed here for the night and it felt so welcoming. Genuinely the staff there are pure genuine and very friendly. We recommended 2 songs for my friends birthday and they did it without a blink of an eye. 100% recommend everyone to come here

The Yard is not just a bar. The Yard is my LIFE. I genuinely don’t even know where to start, because this place is everything and more. The energy, the vibe, the people, the drinks — it all comes together in a way that makes you feel like you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be. From the moment you step in, there’s this unmatched atmosphere: cool, welcoming, alive, unforgettable. The music hits right, the crowd is always immaculate, and every single night feels like a main-character moment. It’s the kind of place where memories are made without even trying. The drinks? Perfect. Consistent, strong, beautifully made — you can tell they care. The staff? Absolute legends. Friendly, warm, professional, and they make you feel at home every single time. You don’t feel like “just another customer” — you feel like part of The Yard. This is the bar I always come back to. The bar I recommend to everyone. The bar that never disappoints. Whether it’s a chill drink or a full night out, The Yard always delivers. If you’re looking for a place with soul, style, and pure good vibes — stop looking. The Yard is the best bar ever. Period.
