The easiest first night at the Yumbo is a drink, a look around and one activity you actually want to do. Book a drag show table if that is your priority, find a terrace if you want conversation, or investigate a dance venue if you want a late night. You do not need to cover the whole center in one evening.
Yumbo Centrum, usually called the Yumbo Centre or simply the Yumbo, is a shopping and leisure complex in Playa del Inglés in southern Gran Canaria. Its official directory brings together shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues. Its postal address is Avenida de Estados Unidos 54, 35100 Maspalomas.
Use our Gran Canaria gay guide to save places before you travel. The suggestions below are researched editorial recommendations, rather than an account of a personal visit.
What the Yumbo is — and how to find your way
Think of the center as a collection of independently operated venues. You can visit for shopping or food and return for nightlife; there is no single bar program that covers the whole complex.
Venues occupy different levels. The center's own listings place Sparkles on the second floor and Mantrix on the fourth. When saving a place, save its unit or level as well as its name. A map pin for the entire shopping center may leave you at the right building but the wrong entrance.
Our practical recommendation is to make a short orientation visit before your main night out. Locate the venue you have booked, note the most convenient entrance from your hotel, and save that route. This is especially useful if you expect to arrive late or meet friends inside.
If you use a wheelchair or have limited mobility, ask the venue about the complete route to its entrance, the toilet and your table. Do not assume that a venue in a shopping center has the same access arrangements as the business next door. We have not independently verified step-free access throughout the complex.
Pick the kind of evening you want
| If you want… | A useful starting point | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| A seated drink and conversation | A cocktail bar or terrace, such as WunderBar | Current opening and seating availability |
| Drag, comedy and a planned activity | Sparkles Show Bar | Booking confirmation, arrival instructions and show details |
| A late dance stop | Mantrix | Current opening, admission and event information |
| A cruising or fetish venue | Read the individual listing, such as Tom's Cruising Bar | Entry policy, dress code and any themed night |
| A Pride atmosphere | The organizer's dated event program | Venue, ticket requirements and transport changes |
This is a way to organize your choices, not a promise about who will be in any venue on a particular night. Crowds vary with the season and event calendar.
Terrace drinks: start with somewhere you can talk
For a first stop, we would choose somewhere you can sit, look around and decide what comes next. WunderBar is worth investigating: the center's official listing describes cocktails and terrace seating.
Check the current program if a particular music night is the reason you want to visit. Venue directory pages can remain online for years, so an old recurring-event description is not sufficient confirmation that the same night still runs this week.
Drag and comedy: make the show your anchor
Sparkles Show Bar is a useful option for travelers who want a specific activity rather than an open-ended night of bar hopping. Its current official website describes comedy drag entertainment and directs visitors to its events and table reservations.
If the show is the main reason for your evening, reserve ahead rather than hoping to find your ideal table after wandering around. The reservation page currently asks guests to arrive by 9:30 p.m., says same-day requests should be made by 6:30 p.m., and advises checking the confirmation for variations. Those are reservation instructions, not a verified show start time. Follow the instructions for your own booking.
Audience participation is part of the venue's advertised format. If you would rather watch from farther back, ask about seating when you book. A group should decide its show plans before arriving; it is easier than trying to combine different expectations at the entrance.
Dancing and cruising: read the venue details first
Mantrix is a dance option listed on the upper level of the center. Its Yumbo listing describes house music and also mentions a cruising area. Check current admission and opening directly rather than treating it as interchangeable with a cocktail bar.
For Tom's Cruising Bar or another cruising venue, establish the entry policy and dress code before going. A particular night may have conditions that do not apply elsewhere in the Yumbo. If you are unsure, asking staff what to expect is a reasonable first step; buying a drink does not commit you to anything else.
Choose venues and activities that suit you, respect other people's boundaries, and ask permission before photographing someone. A holiday atmosphere is not consent to appear in another visitor's social post.
An uncomplicated first-night plan
Before dinner: check any table confirmation, save your hotel address and locate your chosen venue's level. If you have time, look around the center while making your own orientation notes.
First stop: take a terrace seat or find a bar that fits your mood. Use this as time to settle in rather than race through a checklist.
Main activity: go to the show you booked, move to a venue whose music you want, or stay for another drink. For a solo traveler, an activity with a clear focus can make the first night feel less unstructured.
Later: decide whether you genuinely want a late dance or cruising stop. Plan the return to your accommodation before your phone battery becomes the limiting factor.
Where to stay if the Yumbo is your nightly destination
We would start an accommodation search in Playa del Inglés and compare the actual walking route to the Yumbo. A hotel marketed under the broad Maspalomas area may suit a beach or pool holiday but involve transport for each night out.
Two properties with verified official information are worth comparing:
- Axel Beach Maspalomas: its official hotel page identifies an adults-only apartment property at Avenida de Tirajana 32, with entrance on Calle Timple, and describes the Yumbo as a short walk away. Consider it if you want apartment accommodation and an LGBTQ+ focused hotel environment.
- Hotel Ritual Maspalomas: its own website describes LGBTQ+ focused accommodation close to the Yumbo at Avenida Alféreces Provisionales 33. Compare its room categories and facilities with your needs rather than choosing solely on proximity.
Getting there from Gran Canaria Airport
The island's airport operator, Aena, lists bus connections to the southern resorts. Global's route 66 links Gran Canaria Airport and Faro de Maspalomas, with a stop named Shopping Centre Yumbo in both directions.
Check the current timetable against your arrival or departure time. This is not an all-night shuttle: the timetable available at our check showed daytime and evening departures. Do not assume that a late flight has a matching route 66 bus. If you book a transfer or choose a taxi, confirm the arrangements and cost separately.
Pride trips need a different plan
An event week is a different booking decision from an ordinary nightlife holiday. Use the organizers' own program to distinguish a show in the Yumbo from a pool party or excursion elsewhere.
For the next upcoming edition, Winter Pride's official ticket listing shows activities during November 2–8, 2026, including the Yumbo main stage and events at other locations. Check individual ticket and access details; being at the Yumbo does not automatically include every advertised activity.
For Maspalomas Pride by Freedom 2027, the organizer's current homepage confirms May 3–9, 2027 in its August 20 announcement. Check the developing program before choosing accommodation around a particular activity; an event date alone does not confirm its venue or admission arrangements.
Leave time for the rest of Gran Canaria
The Yumbo can be the center of your evenings without filling every day. If you visit the Maspalomas dunes, use the reserve's official trail information to plan a route and follow on-site conservation signs. Choose a proper daytime outing rather than treating the dunes as an informal shortcut.
For your next evening, open the Gran Canaria gay guide, save a few venues that suit your interests, and compare them on the map. A good first visit leaves you with a handful of places you want to return to.
