About Powerhouse

Powerhouse is where Newcastle’s gay village goes when a bar is no longer enough. Dating back to the 1980s, the club has been a defining part of the city’s LGBTQ+ nightlife for decades and remains the obvious late-night destination in the Pink Triangle. The building is large by gay-club standards, with multiple rooms and bars, different music moods and enough space to lose your friends and find them again an hour later.\n\nThe modern crowd is mixed and inclusive rather than exclusively LGBTQ+, but the club’s history, location and programming keep it firmly connected to the gay scene. Friday and especially Saturday are the key nights, with Saturday commonly stretching to 5am. If you are doing the classic Newcastle queer-night route, this is the natural final stop after The Yard, Bank, Switch or Rusty’s.

What to expect

A large, loud, late LGBTQ+ nightclub. Expect several rooms, commercial dance and house, a mixed queer-friendly crowd and peak energy after midnight.

Practical tips before you visit

Saturday is the main all-nighter and commonly runs until 05:00.
The Pink Room operates within the Powerhouse complex and is covered by this listing rather than duplicated as a separate venue.
The crowd is now mixed, but Powerhouse remains historically and operationally central to Newcastle’s gay scene.

I’d like to leave a review about Powerhouse. I’ve visited the place more than once, but yesterday my wallet—containing my documents—was stolen. After I alerted the entire staff, security found it in the restroom; the money was gone, but the documents were still there. A huge thank you to the club staff for helping me find my wallet. And please, stay vigilant.

Oh, what has become of powerhouse?! What was once a brilliant Gay club Is now dull lifeless hole That now just seems to cater for straight students. no more atmosphere no light up dance floor. Yet another queer space lost. Will never be going again

Extremely pricey entry for a venue without any charm or unique appeal. It didn't appear to be a gay or queer club at all. Music wasn't to my taste, unappealing mixes of cheesy hits and chart toppers. Was approached by multiple men and didn't feel especially safe there as a lone woman when I was separated from my friends. Had hoped for a night out in queer company but ended up counting the minutes until my friends were finally ready to leave. Not for me - I won't be making a second visit.

Described as a gay bar on google but let’s be clear - it USED to be a gay nightclub but currently lets anyone in and is absolutely NOT a welcoming LGBTQ+ safe space anymore and hasn’t been for years. Read the other reviews. Powerhouse don’t even promote themselves as a gay venue anymore on socials. It’s open later than other venues so gets full of very rowdy aggressive drunks and chavs and I’ve had homophobic comments from the bouncers before. The bouncers also aren’t there for safety/wellbeing - some are just looking for an excuse to get “rough” with punters using their armband as a “legitimate” excuse.

The bouncers are absolutely vile, shoving and pushing drunken teenage girls around outside because they “can” !! pushing them so hard they fall down and they smirk at you when ur on the floor in a vulnerable state. No offer of help, to ring a taxi, to find friends, NO CONCERN FOR PEOPLES AND PUBLIC SAFETY AT ALL.
