About The Bookish Type

The Bookish Type began life as a touring market stall in 2019 and now operates from 77a Great George Street as an independent queer bookshop and active community space. Its shelves focus on LGBTQIA+ authors and themes across fiction, non‑fiction, YA, children’s titles, zines and graphic novels. Beyond retail, the shop runs events and initiatives — from Queer History Tours and Second Hand Sundays to a Pay It Forward board that helps make books accessible — and maintains a community noticeboard and discounts for local queer book groups. The current team took over the shop in June 2025 and position the store as a practical resource for Leeds’s queer community as well as a place to browse.

What to expect

Expect a curated selection of queer literature and related merch rather than a general bookshop. Visits often include browsing themed shelves, spotting zines and signed stock, or finding out about local events and community projects on the noticeboard.

This is such a lovely bookstore!!! A wide selection of books from all genres, and also a little section of art prints/badges/creations from local artists :))) the staff are really kind and welcoming, and are happy to help you find a book you're looking for!!! I cannot reccommend this bookstore enough :))

Absolutely loved my experience with this independent shop especially the staff member I had was so kind she was and enjoyed talking of course telling them recently I came out as Non Binary and was Transgender before. I loved getting a book for my IRL Non Binary friend for their Christmas present and these pin badges for myself which I would definitely come back again next time to get more badges plus love how it’s so quiet and calm I like. 10/10 experience I would always support Indie and as a LGBTQ person myself I am I recommend going if you’re a ally or LGBTQ. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️
