About The New Penny

The New Penny trades on two clear selling points: heritage and hours. Described on its page as the oldest gay bar in Leeds, it occupies a spot on Call Lane and promotes a "friendly clubby vibe" that leans towards lively late evenings rather than daytime drinking. Its timetable stretches well into the early hours across the week, with particularly extended sessions over the weekend and a daytime opening on Saturday. That rhythm makes it an obvious choice for anyone who wants a late-night stop on Call Lane — whether you’re starting late, finishing elsewhere, or simply want somewhere that stays open when many other venues close. Check the bar’s Facebook page for the latest notices and events.

What to expect

A late-night gay bar with a clubby feel and a welcoming tone. Expect evenings that build after other places close and a venue that runs into the small hours, with weekends noticeably later and a Saturday opening earlier in the day.

Had a lovely night with bar staff and managers. A bouncer was really aggressive towards me and my friends and even started a fight with one of my fellow lgbtq+ plus members because an older local didn’t agree with him drinking in here. The managers assured me they’re not normally this aggressive and agreed as a woman I should not have been manhandled. They assured me it would be dealt with, but ultimately we left the venue feeling unsafe and put off.

Bar staff told the police i was here causing trouble sent them to my house. Iv never been in this bar ever. I guess someone must know me from there that wants to cause trouble and the staff are happy to just lie to police.

Disgusting behaviour from young english doorman tonight, paid entry and bought 2 drinks, my partner went to toilet and when came back was told needed to go outside to be searched? He refused as was no reason or explanation why this was happening and seemed racist as he is foreign and we are a straight couple on a normal night out. This has been reported to police tonight. The doorman then started swearing at us, said does not care about police or management!

The atmosphere and people are good and the drinks are cheap ! But the bouncers are very rude. We went out for a cigarette and got accused of stealing someone’s pack of cigarettes even though we was outside for maybe 20 seconds. And then when we said we didn’t we were questioned as if we was lying then told to give them back ? They then said they’re gonna check the cameras further accusing us and of course they found nothing. Way too aggressive and rude.

Lack of information and guidance. They have not correctly labeled the female toilets - this is a disappointing discovery when my friend did accidentally enter the wrong lavatories. Instead of guiding my friend to the right location, he insisted for her to leave and showed no consideration and empathy. The lack of respect towards woman is lacking at this establishment. In 2024, this needs to be reformed immediately. Thank you. The gentleman in the white showed no empathy.
