Spartan Health Club has been part of Birmingham gay life since 1982, making it the city’s longest-running gay sauna. Hidden away in Erdington rather than the Gay Village, it is smaller and more old-school than the newer city-centre options, with the kind of regulars-know-each-other atmosphere that decades of operation tend to produce.
Facilities include a dry sauna, steam room, private cabins, showers, café, TV lounges, a small gym and play areas, with a straightforward pay-at-the-door setup. If you are searching for a gay sauna in Birmingham that feels local rather than flashy, Spartan is the classic choice. It is also notably cheaper than many UK saunas, which helps keep the crowd broad and the daytime atmosphere social as well as cruisy.
What to expect
A compact, traditional gay sauna with a strong local/regular crowd. It is less glossy than newer venues but has the core heat, steam, cabins, lounge and cruising facilities.
Nice place. I prefer to go to this club because it's easy to get to and very near all the major routes around the city. Friendly staff. Very clean. Worth a visit. This was the first sauna I'd ever gone to. Nice, friendly, relaxing atmosphere. They don't take cards for payments so make sure you take cash.
This is my favorite sauna in Birmingham. Yes, it's small in comparison to others but it's very clean, friendly, and you feel safe. The manager/owner is a nice guy. It's easy to find from the city center and very close to the motorway (spaghetti junction). I've met some great guys there - some have become good friends and wish I'd started long before I first did, five years ago.
Inexpensive (£10 entrance - CASH ONLY) and the food/drinks are also very reasonably priced. I got some free cake with my cup of tea. Nice surprise. If you're gay/bi or bi-curious, and not sure abut the sauna clubs in Birmingham, this is the place I recommend.
I’m not a local and live about 50 miles away but I have been going to Spartan for 20 years. The staff are brilliant good facilities and nice people go there.
The only downside it can be very quiet some days like most gay saunas they are a bit hit and miss.
But over the years, I have had a lot of fun there
And they have a lovely little café where you can chill
