About The Old Coal Yard

The Old Coal Yard sits outside Newcastle’s traditional Gay Village in Ouseburn and gives the city’s LGBTQ+ scene a very different kind of night out. The former coal-yard space operates as a taproom and live-events venue, with Northern Alchemy roots, a strong independent feel and a programme that can move between beer sessions, gigs, DJs, spoken word and queer-focused nights.\n\nIts recurring Queers & Beers programming has brought LGBTQ+ performers, drag, poetry and music into the space, making it more than simply a generic queer-friendly pub. Standard public opening is concentrated around Friday and Saturday, while special events can alter the schedule, so this is a venue to check before travelling. It is a good option for visitors who want queer culture away from the polished bars of the Pink Triangle and prefer Ouseburn’s grassroots atmosphere.

What to expect

A relaxed independent taproom that becomes a live-event and DJ space. It is LGBTQ+-friendly rather than exclusively queer, with recurring queer programming and a grassroots Ouseburn crowd.

I hired The Old Coal Yard for my 40th birthday party. The venue was perfect for what I wanted, with lots of flexibility around set-up and catering. The staff were fantastic, very attentive on the night and all my guests had a great time. Would highly recommend!

Came here with my fiancee and her family for a quick drink. The place is basically a micro brewery that sells alcohol (funnily) and lunches, bacon rolls and some great hangover cure drinks (see photos!). Very rustic feel to it being in a warehouse but pleasant enough. Had a live band playing when we came too. The choice of food was okay being vegetarian we didn't have much to chose although they mentioned this will improve shortly with decent coffees etc. Friendly dece by staff and well I come back, worth a visit just to see an alternative to all the "old man pubs" and annoying posers bars.

Wonderful and unique place for a beer. Serving exceptional Ales from Northern Alchemy. They also did cans / mini kegs for collection during lockdown which was an absolute godsend. Always impressed by the staff and reasonable prices.

Love the Old Coal Yard - It's been my go to through the pandemic cos they've been so welcoming and safe all the way through, but last night we held our reunion party there. After an 18 month wait to see all my pals in one place, it couldn't have been more perfect. Great ale, music and atmosphere! Thanks team OCY

Brewery, bar and venue. You can get beer straight from the Brewing vat so can't get fresher than that! Great atmosphere for a gig.
