About The Yard

The Yard has been part of Newcastle’s LGBTQ+ nightlife since the early 1980s, making it one of the defining addresses in the city’s Pink Triangle. The downstairs bar is the social heart of the venue: easy-going drinks, karaoke, drag and resident DJs, with a crowd that can shift from regulars and early-evening drinkers to a much livelier late-night mix. Upstairs, Oscars gives the same building a more cocktail-led feel and a useful change of pace without leaving the venue.\n\nFor visitors trying Newcastle gay nightlife for the first time, The Yard is one of the easiest places to start. It sits at the beginning of the Scotswood Road cluster, a short walk from Central Station, and several of the city’s other LGBTQ+ bars, clubs and the sauna are within minutes. It works particularly well for groups who want somewhere recognisably gay and social before moving on to Switch, Powerhouse or one of the later venues nearby.

What to expect

A classic gay bar rather than a polished superclub. Expect a conversational early evening, then drag, karaoke and DJs as the night builds. Oscars upstairs gives you a second atmosphere without changing address.

Practical tips before you visit

The Yard traces its history back to the early 1980s.
Oscars is upstairs in the same building and is best treated as part of The Yard rather than a separate venue.
The Pink Triangle is compact: Switch, The Bank, The Eagle, Number 52 and other venues are all close by.

After traveling to the other end of the country and going to Newcastle I'd googled some bars and the yard came up as a great place. After a long day of traveling I wanted to relax and see some entertainment. I waited at the bar and the male bar staff barely acknowledged me but I finally got served after he saw me trying to get his attention. He seemed to be day dreaming. Sat down with my drink and saw a drag artist walking around offering shots from table to table then walked right past mine but offered them to the table either side. This happened multiple times even after trying to get their attention. After a few drinks I decided to leave then heard some sarky comment from the drag act as I left. A highly disappointing experience. As new to the scene it already made a nervous person even more self conscious of who they are. Hopefully the next place I visit will be a little more welcoming

Visiting Newcastle Today so I decided to have a wander down the Gay Village. Popped into The Yard, I haven't been in this bar for a long time, I used to work there for Adrian Gadd. I was quite shocked to hear that Adrian passed away. Still a good bar though although it was a little quiet for a Bank Holiday. I got here a little to early. Guy working behind the bar, I didn't catch his name but he was spot on obviouslygoid staff training.. Great customer service. Something which I look for as I worked in Hospitality for many years up to Duty Manager Level. Like the decor too. I will be probably be back for Pride.

Disgusting security staff. They refused to let my friend into the club even though he had valid ID — a BRP issued by the government, which is accepted across the UK. The supervisor was also rude and seemed unaware of the ID rules.

We hired the upstairs area - Oscars bar and lounge for our Wedding Celebration Party. Andy, Danny and the team were fantastic and so accommodating. They really were super! Danni Delonco - Drag Queen Extraordinaire did a fabulous job as host DJ and also did a comedy sketch for us. My now Husband and I could not have been happier with many of the guests proclaiming that it had 'been the best wedding party they had ever been to' Thanks so much guys for making our day so special. I would highly recccommend the venue to anyone considering a marriage 🍾 celebration with a difference. Lots of love Richard and Mariusz xx
